The Maverick-Must Have & Highlights During NYFW

New York Fashion Week has ended. But that doesn’t mean the fashion has to.  Though there were lots to see and plenty to WOW about, my little excursion throughout NYFW led me to some interesting shows and presentations.  Many filled with embroidery and jewels,  most spreading awareness and strong messages surrounding the current events taking place in our world today, and some with interestingly fashionable front-seaters and guests.  One brand I came across summed up everything NYFW stands for: “MAKING A STATEMENT”.  It is also a #MaverickMustHave .

Blakus Fringe CrossbodyGILT x Blakus came together to host an awesome event celebrating their collaborative launch.  Blakus is a unique handbag line created by French designer, Nawell.  The extremely detailed handbags are made by hand and filled with studs and jewels.  One signature backpack takes a minimum of 700 hours to make.  Supermodel, Chanel Iman made a guest appearance at the launch wearing her favorite bag, the crossbody. Her favorite part of the bag is the fringes.  She describes the collection as “Chic Rock Glam”.  “I love every piece.  They are all unique and different.  It’s a good statement piece to dress up your look.”

If you are familiar with Gilt.com, you know that items do not last long on their site.  Also, “making a statement” will cost you.  The exclusive bags range from $900-$3000.  Nonetheless, the exclusive bags can be dressed up or dressed down.  It can be worn in a casual setting, as well as a formal setting.  I personally can see myself walking in to a formal event with one of the sparkly backpacks in a gown. Check out the up close video on these beauties:

While many shows took places, there were very few that caught my attention… and time. Here are some highlights from a few of my favorite shows:

Red Dress Collection 2018 brought to you by Macy’s and Go Red For Women

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Go Red For Women™ Red Dress Collection Red Dress Collection, presented by Macy’s, kicked off New York Fashion Week at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.  Every year, celebrities would hit the runway in red designer outfits, dedicating their time and commitment to women’s heart health and supporting Go Red For Women’s efforts to raise awareness of heart disease in women.  Celebrities that hit this year’s runway include Melissa Joan Hart, Lynn Whitfield, Tatyana Ali, Nicki Taylor, CeCe Winans, Zuri Hall, just to name a few.  The show ended with an outstanding performance by R&B group En Vogue.

Black Panther “Welcome to Wakanda”

New York Fashion Week got a piece of the Black Panther action.  The Black Panther “Welcome to Wakanda” presentation showcased one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by the movie.  These designs were created by seven bespoke designers.  These designers worked with Marvel to each create a piece depicting a character or theme from the movie.  Who are these designers might you ask?  CHROMAT, Cushnie et Ochs, Fear of God, Ikiré Jones, Laquan Smith, Sophie Theallet, and Tome.
